Often plenty, stuntmen and stuntwomen play a vital part in some of the most iconic scenes in films. Yet, stuntmen and stuntwomen are invisible to the audience due tp the magic of movie making. Unknown to many, Shane Rangi is an experienced histrion, stunt man, and motility capture performer from New Zealand with an impressive filmography. He worked on projects such as The Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Wolverine, Spartacus, and The Hobbit.

Returning to Middle-earth as an orc in The Hobbit, Shane get-go set human foot into Middle-globe a Harad leader or as one of the Nazguls in LOTR. Middle-earth News had the opportunity to talk with Shane about The Hobbit, conventions, and his work equally a stuntman and move capture performer.

As an actor, tin can you tell united states of america something most the differences between acting behind a mask and motion capture?

Shane: They are at the contrary ends of the scale. Interim in prosthetics is hot, difficult and physically demanding work, but equally an player there is no easier style to get into graphic symbol than seeing the transformation take identify in front of you. Then you have to work out if the prosthetic and the costume you lot are wearing exaggerates or compresses your movements and expressions. Whereas during motility capture, you put on a comfy lycra conform (that leaves nothing to the imagination). You are acting in a big empty infinite with nothing effectually y'all, so you actually have to believe in the scene and the character y'all are doing because believe it or non yous tin really tell when someone is not in character. I thing they both have in mutual, though, is that no ane sees your face and has no idea yous played that character.

How do you proceed your spirits up during long days on the gear up, specially when wearing armour or being covered in prosthetics?

Shane: Yous know what, I love what I exercise and I dear a challenge, so for me its about keeping positive. No thing how difficult information technology is, I could always be doing something harder. Also, everyone'south job on a motion-picture show ready is difficult so if you lot can make the people effectually you grinning then you are happy. Laughing is always the all-time for keeping your spirits up.

You worked on many keen projects similar Narnia, Spartacus,  LOTR and many more. Do yous accept a favorite?

Shane: The Panthera leo The Witch and The Wardrobe is my favourite. When I was flying upwards to Auckland for my start show and tell in front of Andrew Adamson, I was looking out the window and realized I was about to be in the picture of the just book I had e'er read as a child! And then remembered how many nights, after I read the book, I would crawl through my grandmother's wardrobe to see if I could discover Narnia.

The scariest for me was Spartacus as that was the kickoff time I would walk out of costume with less apparel than I went in with. Plus people could see it was me, but I did dear playing Dagan! Ooooh and doing the motion capture for Gort and Ironman was pretty cool, too as playing the Silver Samurai and fighting confronting my favourite comic hero  Wolverine; Hugh was astonishing.

Since you worked on Narnia and LOTR, 2 of the greatest fantasy phenomena around today, can y'all tell u.s.a. something about the atmosphere while shooting?

Shane: The temper was very like on both as a lot of the aforementioned crew worked on Narnia that worked on LOTR. So for me, it was like a family reunion. LOTR was amazing as there was a lot of kiwi ingenuity to arrive piece of work and every one pitched in. Information technology wasn't until we saw the 30min Carnes Film Festival release when we realized how massive the project was we were involved with.

Can you tell us something about your piece of work onThe Hobbit? How was information technology going back to Eye-earth?

Shane: Unfortunately this time around I wasn't as involved withThe Hobbit every bit much as I was in LOTR, merely to my relief I was brought on when they needed larger numbers. It was keen reuniting with the stunts team and beingness lucky enough to work under Glenn Boswell. Information technology was also great to sit down in the make up chair once once again with Tami Lane and Gino Acevedo, reminiscing and sharing the memories of doing make-ups on LOTR. Getting to travel and apparel up as an orc over again was great, just let me tell you,  nothing will always compare to Helms Deep.

What experiences did you have on the fix ofThe Hobbit and what volition you think most?

Shane: I am lucky enough that simply beingness on The Hobbit was something I will always remember, merely there are few special moments that I volition treasure for ever. Similar, beingness given a bottle of wine and a domestic dog os by Richard or the fourth dimension he gave me a stone from the set nosotros were doing a fight scene on. Giving John a fear every bit they were rowing the boat out at lake Tekapo. H2o was 6 degrees and I was underneath the gunkhole to effort and go on information technology straight and they had no idea I was under there, until they called "Cutting" and I popped up
on the side of the boat.

But the one experience I am lucky to have and still makes me grin to this twenty-four hours is, after lying in freezing h2o at the lakes edge for hours as a dead body I was finally wrapped, and as I made my way upwards the bank, Evangeline came upward, thanked me and gave me a osculation on the cheek!! That still warms my middle at present, even though she probably has no recollection of information technology.

When was the outset time y'all discovered Tolkien and his stories?

Shane: When I outset Auditioned for LOTR. I am serious, I am not much of a reader and in fact in my very start Q&A I was asked if I had read The Lord of the Rings, I said no. I started when I was on LOTR, and got equally far every bit "The Lord of the Rings" by J R Tolkien… a voice in the crowd says "I think y'all will find its J R R Tolkien".

You've been to many conventions, next time fans tin can come across you in November at Collectormania 20. Do you lot have any interesting fan encounters or stories to share?

Shane: Man, I am really excited about going to Collectormania twenty!! Fingers crossed people volition come and see me. I  oasis't done any Cons in a few years. I have lots of interesting stories  and every fan I encounter has been a pleasure. I just hope that after they met me, I accept been able to leave them with a few stories.

But I do dearest the fact that some fans remember what I like when I accept tried foods or drinks for the first time with them and they side by side time they encounter me they bring information technology for me. Oh and the time I wore a kilt at Collectormania in Glasgow: That was pretty cool!

Tin you lot tell us something about hereafter projects?

Shane: Well I am fastened to a few projects, simply none of them accept a greenish calorie-free yet, but fingers crossed ane of them goes alee.Dark Hollow is a horror based on the book written past Brian Keene and volition be directed by Paul Campion.Mary Doe and Pray for Dawnare both zombie movies, but the one I hope really gets washed is Sundays Commuter as I will get to act with Grit Clare again.

There is really one other but I take to exist pretty tight lipped about that i. Got to go along my answers suspenseful and not as well boring somehow. haha
